Ladies and gentlemen I proceed to show you the new trending hairstyle of this year. Articles from yahoo, daily mail and cosmo are calling it boxer braids!. The daily mail states that the look was first worn by female boxers and Hilary Swanks character in million dollar baby. It is also the reverse of the french braid. Cosmopolitan said that Miley Cyrus is proof that you can braid on short hair!. On the Cosmo site there are 131 pictures of different variations of this hairstyle on white women. 3/131 are black women.

Take a look below to see pictures on the new hair trend…

The Angry Black Woman

As black women we have the right to be angry!                                                                               Angry once again because the media are stripping our culture. Some may argue that the hair trend is a celebration of our culture and we should be happy that it is trending. Yes we should be happy that it is trending because we are so fabulous first the lips now this! -.-. However this is far from a celebration it’s called stealing! I say stealing because in all the articles they have decided to rename the word cornrows and call it boxer braids, they show various white ladies wearing the hairstyle. It is clear that they are trying to re brand it to appeal to white people. Also 3/131 women in the pictures are black with this hairstyle. A celebration would be to acknowledge that in the African-American, Caribbean, Black British, African and Latin community these so called “boxer braids” are aka cornrows aka fishbone hairstyles aka French plait. Have been used for centuries. A celebration would be showing pictures of incredible designs that are created on the hair with natural hair or extensions. A celebration would be showing examples of black women with cornrows on their websites. A celebration would be having an interview with a person who specialises in cornrows. A celebration would be doing the appropriate research before educating people with lies!

This is Cultural appropriation.

The article says could an average woman without a designer wardrobe pull this hairstyle off?  (black girls do it everyday)

Cultural appropriation: It has little to do with one’s exposure to and familiarity with different cultures. Instead, cultural appropriation typically involves members of a dominant group exploiting the culture of less privileged groups — often with little understanding of the latter’s history, experience and traditions. Here are some beautiful creations that they wont show you.

  1. Omg I love this. It couldn’t have come at a better time. Especially with frustration building and black women hving to feel neglected and put down. Why should it only be something that can be appreciated on white people. Stop white washing I say.

  2. This was a great post! I hate how media seems to make everything look different than things actually are and it really pisses me off too.

I couldn’t agree with you more on this ! It feels like no matter what a black woman does, it doesn’t mean anything unless a white women adopts it ! I mean come one ! First worn by a boxer ? My grandmother back in Nigeria used to do this before kim k’s mother was born …

  5. I can believe how annoying is this, finding how media twisted the truth. I like and prefer the original name Cornrows rather than boxer braids.
